Carolina Reaper is world’s hottest pepper

Thursday, December 26th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Guinness Book of World Records says the hottest peppers in the world are grown in South Carolina.

Ed Currie took a sweet hot pepper from the Caribbean and worked to make it hotter.

The Carolina Reaper has just become the world’s hottest chili, beating out the former record holder, the Trinidad Scorpion.

Smokin’ Ed Currie is the President and Chef of Puckerbutt Pepper Company.

According to the Associated Press, Currie’s Carolina Reaper peppers registered at nearly 1.6 million Scoville Heat Units.

One local Wilmington chef says he is used to serving hot things, but none as fiery as that.

“We have an inferno sauce here that is one of the hottest in town and people love that. If we have the adventurous folks that come in and want to try it, I don’t mind giving people what they want,” said Dylan Sabo, Hell’s Kitchen Chef.

A regular jalapeno pepper registers around 5,000 on the Scoville scale.

After-Christmas shopping and returns begin in the Port City

Thursday, December 26th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Christmas is over, but the sales and returns are just beginning.

You’ve stuffed your face with delicious Christmas treats, unwrapped some the presents under the tree, and hopefully thanked Santa for the wonderful gifts. But Santa did not please everyone this year.

While Santa and his reindeer headed back to the North Pole, many awoke early from their Christmas-induced comas to return presents, and catch special deals on what they really wanted underneath the tree.

The deals and shoppers were in abundance at the best buy in Wilmington.

The parking lot was packed, and lines were longer than usual as the after-Christmas frenzy began.

“This is traditionally the day that people come, and if they didn’t get exactly the right present that they wanted, they come and they find the model, or the color, or what have you,” Best Buy Sales Manager David Kinsel said. “But they come in and they find the thing that they wanted, and they exchange it out.”

“I got an IPad case, but it doesn’t fit, so I’m going to get a different one,” Emma English said.

“I got a tripod and no camera, so I had to get the camera for the tripod,” Hayden Mingus said.

“I got a bunch of gift cards, so we’ll go out and go spend some money on that,” Antonio Florez said.

“I got a guitar, and 6 months of lessons. And I got UGGs,” Aariana Vick said.

Vick and her father traveled to best buy for a special gift.

Even though Vick says she got exactly what she wanted for Christmas, her parents had one last surprise present, a new computer.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it, and then we went and got it,” Vick said with joy.

She says thanks to after-Christmas deals, her parents got $100 off, putting it right in their price range.

“I’m just excited to have it, and use it all,” Vick said.

Best buy says their holiday return policy runs through January 15, so if you have any gifts you need to return, there is still time.
