New releases, family traditions make for a busy Christmas day at the movies

Thursday, December 26th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After the turkey and presents, many of Wilmington residents headed to the movies to check out some of the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

Few places are open on Christmas day, but fortunately for many the movie theater is one of them.

“It’s always one of our busiest days of the year and we have been very busy today,” said Alicia Hammitt.

Hammitt is the Manager at Carmike Cinemas in Wilmington. She says Christmas day is when many highly anticipated films make their big-screen debut.

“The Wolf of Wall Street has been really popular…pretty much they are all doing pretty well,” said Hammitt.

John Wharton and his children took a break from the toys to check out a movie the whole family could enjoy.

“The children wanted to see ‘Frozen’ and that is what we are doing,” said Wharton.

A good time is what brought Christine Lapaire and her friends out to the movies on Christmas day.

“I decided to come with my friends. I have never come before and it’s a really cool tradition,” said Lapaire.

Employees say the holidays are busy because the business sells a lot of gift cards for Christmas, which people often redeem later in the day.

Wharton says coming to the movies on Christmas may soon be added to their list of family traditions.

“It is wonderful. It is all about the birth of Christ, but this was just about having a good time,” said Wharton.

Carmike employees say Christmas day until New Year’s Day is the theater’s busiest time of year.
