Pembroke to hold 1st New Year’s Eve Pine Cone Drop

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

PEMBROKE, NC (AP) — The town of Pembroke will celebrate the end of 2013 with the help of a nearly 400-pound pine cone.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the town is holding its first New Year’s Eve Pine Cone Crop at the Pembroke Recreational Complex.

Richard Lowry, owner of Lowry Plumbing Co., and members of the Pembroke Fire Department tested the 6-foot-tall pine cone Monday afternoon by attaching it to the bucket of an engine and raising it.

The pine cone is made of handcrafted sheet metal leaves that range from dark to light in color. A team of welders and fabricators who work with Lowry created the pine cone. Lowry says the material and labor were donated.

Emerald Isle to hold annual controlled deer hunts

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

EMERALD ISLE, NC (AP) — Emerald Isle will begin annual controlled hunts to deal with the town’s growing deer population, rather than holding them just every other year.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported the Emerald Isle Board of Commissioners has authorized annual controlled hunts, starting with one in January or February. Commissioners also approved the use of sharpshooters, although the 2014 hunt will be limited to bow hunters.

A state biologist estimates 159 deer lived in Emerald Isle in fall 2013, up from 141 the previous year. The state Wildlife Resources Commission estimates the town should have about 50 deer to maintain a healthy population.

Officials say public safety is an issue, with the number of collisions of deer and vehicles increasing from 19 in 2012 to 30 in 11 months of 2013.
