Woman dies in wreck with Cumberland County deputy

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — A woman has died in a wreck with a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy.

State troopers say the crash happened at about 10:30 p.m. Monday as two deputies in separate vehicles responded to a call about a possible suicide attempt.

Troopers say the woman’s SUV allegedly hit one deputy’s car but didn’t stop. Somewhere between Fayetteville and Hope Mills, authorities say the woman hit the second deputy’s car as they entered a sharp curve in the road.

The woman was killed in that crash, and the deputy broke an ankle. The deputy involved in the first crash wasn’t hurt.

The woman’s name hasn’t been released.

3 NC children possibly sickened by E. coli

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

LEXINGTON, NC (AP) — Health officials in Davidson County are investigating a possible E. coli outbreak after three children have become ill.

The Davidson County Health Department confirmed Monday that two Tyro Middle School students had been hospitalized with a recent history of severe bloody diarrhea. A case of E. coli has been identified in a third child who has not been hospitalized and doesn’t go to the same school as the other two children.

Officials say the two hospitalized children have already been treated with antibiotics, so lab tests don’t pinpoint E. coli as the cause for their ailments.

E. coli is a bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are the most susceptible.
