Jury selection underway for Club 609 murder

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Jury selection for a 2011 Wilmington murder trial was slow moving today as whispers around the courtroom suggested the defendant might accept a plea deal.

Jury selection for Garry Orlando Hines, 20, was set to begin at 9 a.m., but potential jurors didn’t enter the courtroom until a little after 2 p.m.

Cornelius Blanks, 20, was shot and killed during an early-morning fight in May 2011 outside Club 609 at Market St. and Kerr Ave. in Wilmington. Investigators say Hines pulled the trigger.

Talks of a plea deal circled around the courthouse Wednesday, but no one could confirm whether Hines was offered a deal or what that deal may have been. Hines’s family said they did not know of any plea deal.

After jury selection is completed, the trial begins with opening statements.

Hines also faces several heroin-related charges in an unrelated case.

Cayman rescuers end search for missing NC diver

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) — Rescuers in the Cayman Islands have ended their search for a North Carolina man who vanished during a diving excursion.

The missing 57-year-old man’s tank, buoyancy control device and an article of his clothing have been found in depths greater than 110 feet at the Barracuda Wall dive site. But despite three days of searching, they have found no sign of David Byles of Pinehurst.

Police Inspector Ian Yearwood said Wednesday that rescuers have done as much as they can do to recover his body and “bring some closure to his family.” He says the decision to end the search has been discussed with Byles’ wife.

Byles was last seen Sunday after surfacing from a dive. He vanished while swimming back to the boat with his wife.
