NC Museum of Art receives work by Mary Cassatt

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – A Winston-Salem woman and some anonymous donors have given the N.C. Museum of Art its first work by Mary Cassatt for its permanent collection.

Officials said Tuesday that “Portrait of Madame X Dressed for the Matinee” will go on view in the museum’s impressionist gallery later this month.

The painting was owned by R. Phillip and Charlotte Hanes. Charlotte Hanes and other donors gave the painting to the museum in memory of her husband.

Cassatt was an American artist who painted the portrait of a fashionably dressed woman in 1877-1878, an important time in her career. After the official Paris Salon rejected her work in 1877, Cassatt became one of only two women to be invited to exhibit with a group of artists known as impressionists.
