City Council to consider gang prevention grant, golf course renovation

Monday, January 20th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fighting Wilmington’s gang problem is among the agenda items for tomorrow’s Wilmington City Council meeting.

Council will consider a resolution to apply for a $71,720 grant for gang prevention initiatives. The city says it would use the money from the NC Governor’s Crime Commission to hire one full-time and one part-time gang prevention specialist. Those positions would work with youth identified as high-risk to join a gang.

Council will also get its first look at plans to restore the greens at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. Last fall the city awarded at $121,000 design contract to John Fought Design Golf Course Architecture to put together plans for the first restoration of the course since it was completed in 1929. The $700,000 project will include restoration of all greens, approaches, bunkers, irrigation improvements and improved drainage. The city says the course hosts and average of 60,000 rounds of golf each year.

Family: Shooting victim killed by fellow gang member

Monday, January 20th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The family of an 18-year-old man shot and killed last night in Wilmington says the shooting was gang related.

Investigators say Raequan Rouse was shot several times at N. 10th St. and Campbell St. They say the teen died shortly after he was brought to the hospital.

Stunned by his death and mourning his loss, Rouse’s family says the 18-year-old was part of the Bloods gang. They say the gunman was also a Blood, but they do not know exactly what led to the shooting.

Police say Rouse was shot multiple times sunday night and taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by car. His family says it was a bullet to the neck that killed him.

“These boys around town are going crazy for no reason,” Rouse’s cousin Rakeem Jackson said. “But whoever did it, y’all should be ashamed of y’all’s self.”

A neighbor who did not want to go on camera says when she heard the commotion and peaked out the door she saw about six people in the street fighting.

Police have not given any information about a suspect.
