WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s not often we get a snow day in southeastern North Carolina. So why let it go to waste when we finally get one?
Everything from skim boards to street signs were used as as sleds. Kids of all ages made downtown Wilmington into a playground this afternoon.
“You got to throw in the towel on a day like this,” Debbie Smaxwell said.
And mostly importantly you have to embrace your surroundings, like many people did in downtown Wilmington.
“All the pros are out today,” sledder Evan Ryan said. “We only have the opportunity to do this every couple of years or so.”
The streets were more like a mountain of sorts with icy fun everywhere you turned.
“We have the skim boards out here,” Jordan Isles said. “Using school for more than an education.”
For some who aren’t used to these conditions, they, too, got an education in sledding.
“I haven’t mastered it as much as the two guys I’m out with today,” Emily Kane said. “They seem to go straight down the street, and I end up in the gutter every time.”
Although Kane admits her skills are not quite up to par, just down the road Bella and Norma, a pair of Golden Retrievers, thrived in the cool weather.
“The stick throwing was a lot more exciting cause they were sliding a lot more,” Smaxwell said.
A group of CFCC students slipped and slid all over the place and took surfing to a whole new level by tying a tow rope to the back of a truck.
“It’s basically like knee-boarding in ice on a skim board,” Kaleb Dunlow said. “We didn’t have any sleds, and we had skim boards sitting around our apartment. They work good on sand and water, so we figured it would work on ice.”
Remember: Don’t try that at home.
With many schools and businesses already announcing closings for tomorrow, a lot of people around the region will be able to take advantage of the slopes for another day.
