WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Skip Watkins announced he would seek the office of County Commissioner for New Hanover County. Watkins fell just 470 votes short of being elected to the Wilmington City Council in 2013, his first bid for public office.
“I have always known that I would serve in public office. I was raised that service to your fellow man is of the highest order. New Hanover County has given us a great life. Valerie and I have raised our children here and look forward to seeing our family grow here. It has been our home for the last thirty-five years,” said Watkins.
“So now it is my turn to give back to the citizens of New Hanover County. It is my intention to continue and defend the strong fiscal leadership our county has enjoyed for many years.”
With the announcement Friday that Commissioner Tom Wolfe would not seek election this year, Watkins says he wanted to get out there quickly with his intentions. “Tom has been a rock solid commissioner and I would have loved to have served with him. I know he will continue to serve this county in other ways.” Watkins added.
Watkins says his goal is to help facilitate opportunities for all local governments to work together to make our county the envy of North Carolina.
