NC price gouging law in effect through winter storm

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina’s price gouging law is in effect after a State of Emergency was declared due to a winter storm that’s expected to bring snow, sleet and ice to much of North Carolina.

Price gouging, or charging too much in times of crisis, is against North Carolina law when a disaster, an emergency or an abnormal market disruption for critical goods and services is declared or proclaimed by the governor, according to a news release from the Attorney General’s Office. The law also applies to all levels of the supply chain from the manufacturer to the distributor to the retailer.

The state of emergency declared today applies to all of North Carolina and is in effect until rescinded.

Consumers can report potential price gouging to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Call (877) 5-NO-SCAM or file a price gouging complaint online.
