State of Emergency declarations in effect, shelter open in Shallotte

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Several area governments have declared States of Emergency as a winter storm bears down on southeastern North Carolina. Sleet, freezing rain and ice are all forecast for the region through tomorrow morning.

Brunswick County Emergency Services says a a pet-friendly shelter is opening at 1 p.m. at West Brunswick High School at 550 Whiteville Rd. NW in Shallotte.

Deputy Emergency Services Director Scott Garner says the goal is to open the shelter so anyone who thinks they may need it can get there before roads in the area get too bad.

The American Red Cross says volunteers are providing a warm place to stay for anyone who may be affected by the winter storm.

The county says there are some cots and bedding available at the shelter, but a limited amount, so residents are encouraged to bring bedding with them if possible.

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family:

-Prescriptions and emergency medications
-Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
-Identification to show residence is in affected area and important personal documents
-Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
-Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
-Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled

Derailed train back on track

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A train is back on track after a derailment between the 100 block of Marstellar St. and S. Front St. in Wilmington blocked the road for several hours this morning.

Wilmington Fire Department Batt. Chief Tim Smith says the train slid off the tracks around midnight but did not overturn.

He says they do not think it was caused by the chilly weather. However he did have a few pointers for how to deal with the cold.

“If you can stay inside, indoors, the best thing to do is stay bundled up beside a fireplace, have a glass of wine, something, whatever. Just stay indoors, because it’s going to be brutally cold,” Smith said.

Smith says to make sure you have plenty of water and food. And for drivers who may not be used to the icy weather, Smith says to stay off the roads at all costs.
