Emergency shelter set up in Shallotte

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Emergency Services says a shelter is opening at 1 p.m. at West Brunswick High School at 550 Whiteville Rd. NW in Shallotte.

Deputy Emergency Services Director Scott Garner says the goal is to open the shelter so anyone who thinks they may need it can get there before roads in the area get too bad.

The American Red Cross says volunteers are providing a warm place to stay for anyone who may be affected by the winter storm.

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family:

-Prescriptions and emergency medications
-Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
-Identification to show residence is in affected area and important personal documents
-Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
-Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
-Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled

The Red Cross notes that public health regulations do not permit pets in shelters. Service animals are permitted.
