UNC chancellor sued for academic probe information

Friday, January 24th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A Raleigh newspaper is suing the chancellor at the University of North Carolina for information about athletic and academic standards.

The News & Observer of Raleigh on Thursday sued UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt for access to a spreadsheet or database with information that could explain the beginning of the problems.

UNC Vice Chancellor Joel Curran says to reveal the information would violate students’ rights to privacy.

Folt on Thursday publicly accepted the university’s responsibility for bogus classes benefiting student athletes that were offered through the African and Afro-American Studies Department. She acknowledged a failure of academic oversight.

Investigations have revealed that about 200 lecture-style classes were offered in the department as far back as the mid-1990s where there is little indication of instruction.

7th District GOP candidates trade poll numbers, political jabs

Friday, January 24th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the saying goes, numbers never lie, but that might not be true in the Republican primary for the 7th District Congressional seat.

“You have to look at the questions that were asked in the poll,” said Woody White. “The devil is always in the details.”

Thursday morning the David Rouzer campaign released a poll showing that the Johnston County Republican had a 36 point lead, and that he had better name recognition in Raleigh and Wilmington.

“My goal in this campaign is to let people know who I’m about, and what I’m about, and my vision for the future and that’s the vision I’m going to stay focused on,” said David Rouzer.

Woody White’s campaign fired back by releasing their own poll numbers which show that the race was statistically dead even, and that White held advantages in two of the largest counties in the district.

“He still hasn’t connected with the citizens of this 7th district,” said White. “We’ve been campaigning for three weeks and our poll which was a neutral poll shows that this district wants fresh new energetic leadership.”

Regardless of the numbers each candidate says they will win the election based upon their morals and sound political policy.

“I have a strong investment in Southeastern North Carolina and I have a lot of great experience to help turn this country around and take care of the local needs particularly our beach nourishment, inlet dredging, and these coastal insurance rates that are going out of site,” said Rouzer.

“I have raised my family here, built my business in this district, and that’s what it’s going to take to change America,” said White. “I’m an average American from the real world and not just another lobbyist.”
