CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) – The foundation backed by North Carolina’s largest health insurer is putting another $3 million into helping more children in child care to eat healthy and exercise.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation is announcing Thursday a second $3 million grant over three years to the North Carolina Partnership for Children. The money will expand Shape NC, which is an effort to improve the health of more than 1,000 young North Carolina children.

The foundation says the program is expected to expand from about 20 child care centers to about 240. The program says it has increased the number of children provided with fruit two or more times a day and gotten center operators to add bike paths and vegetable gardens for outdoor learning.

Crews repair Wilmington gas leak, warn drivers of odor & black ice

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A gas leak in Wilmington is contained and roads are back open this morning after crews say they found a malfunction sparked the leak.

It all started around 2:30 a.m. at 810 Sunnyvale Drive near Bryan Road. Wilmington firefighters, police and gas crews all responded to the leak, which closed down parts of the road there.

Fire crews tried to evacuated two homes nearby, but say no one was there. Gas crews called for additional help during repairs, and were able to determine that the leak was caused by a valve malfunction.

No one was hurt, but firefighters say a strong odor could linger in the air in that area throughout the day. They also warn drivers to watch out for water spots and black ice on those roads.
