Cook fired after incident with McCrory gets job offers

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — The cook who was fired from his job at a Charlotte food store and restaurant after a confrontation with Gov. Pat McCrory this week says he’s received several job offers.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Drew Swope said he’s also gotten an offer of help from Mayor Patrick Cannon.

Swope was fired from Reid’s Fine Foods on Sunday after he had a dispute with McCrory, who was in the store. Swope said he asked McCrory if he could help him and then said “thanks for nothing” when he realized he was speaking with the governor, with whom he disagrees politically.

Swope says he doesn’t blame the store for firing him, because customers deserve good service.

Mayor Cannon said he is only trying to help a constituent find a job.

Advocacy group sues NC DMV claiming discrimination

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — An advocacy group representing disabled people is suing the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, charging the agency discriminates against drivers with disabilities.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by Disability Rights NC, and it alleges that drivers with disabilities are subjected to unnecessary road testing and medical exams, based on stereotypes and generalizations about people with physical disabilities. The group says DMV is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act.

Executive Director Vicki Smith said the plaintiffs in the case were referred for testing or medical review by DMV staff based on its policies toward drivers with disabilities. She said the drivers were capable and safe.

A DMV official had no immediate comment on the lawsuit Tuesday afternoon.
