Alderman Elementary celebrates birthday by filling new time capsule

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Alderman Elementary students celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary by preparing for the future Tuesday night.

At a ceremony in Wilmington, teachers and alumni joined the students to help put mementos into a new time capsule after opening one from 20 years ago. Students also sang a new rendition of the school song.

Earlier in the day, teachers and students lined the halls of the school with posters showing what was going on in history when the school opened in 1964.

Principal Bob Maxey said it was a great educational experience for students.

City Council now accepting bids for golf course

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington City Council voted to start accepting bids to renovate the Municipal Golf Course Tuesday evening.

The City Council discussed options for paying for the project to cover construction costs, as well as the anticipated loss of revenue while the course is closed.

The Council discussed using money from the golf course Capital Fund, leftover parks bond funds, and money from an increase in greens fees.

City looks at Transportation Bond Initiative

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington City Council formed a committee Tuesday night to work on a transportation bond initiative that could help ease traffic congestion.

The city has identified several transportation needs, but does not have the money to fund all of the projects.

City Council will have to settle on a list of projects by the end of April to get the bond referendum on the ballot in November.
