Alderman Elementary celebrates 50th birthday

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It will be a blast from the past tonight at Alderman Elementary as the schools celebrates a major milestone: the big 5-0.

Construction on Alderman Elementary finished in 1963, and the school opened its doors for the first time to students in 1964. Tonight the school celebrates its 50th birthday with a party complete with entertainment, special guests and, of course, a delicious cake.

Teachers and students lined the halls of the school with posters showing what was going on in history when the school first opened.

Tonight students will sing songs of the ’60s and a new rendition of the school song. They will also open a time capsule from 20 years ago.

The school’s first principal and alumni, including WWAY’s Trot Nixon, will join in on the birthday fun, too.

Principal Bob Maxey says this will be a great educational experience for students.

“Celebrating this is kind of letting them know what the history of the school is, knowing what that connection is, and building a sense of community,” Maxey said.

The celebration kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
