Wrightsville Beach leaders considering parking rate increases

Friday, February 28th, 2014

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Beach weather may be a few weeks away, but you may want to take a little extra change on your next trip to Wrightsville Beach.

“I wanted to come here for the weekend and it’s really nice,” said Trinna Langdon.

For Trinna Langdon a trip to Wrightsville Beach was supposed to be a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of living in the Triangle, but she says her first trip may be her last.

“If you have to worry about where your car is parked, and going back every so often to put the money in and everything it’s really difficult, and it makes it more stressful,” said Trinna Langdon. “You need to make it easy for people to come and visit your town. If you make it hard then I’m not going to come.”

The town is discussing raising the hourly rate from $2.00 to $2.50 per hour.

Day passes could also go up from $12.00 to $14.00 with commercial passes nearly doubling in cost from $290 to $500 per year.

The extra revenue could then be used for a number of services across the island.

“Parking revenue helps to cover the cost for the extra lifeguards, lifeguard stands, extra police, and the extra services that are required,” said Jim Hoge. “We feel that it’s worthwhile to pay a little bit more if they’re going to have the services that they need to feel safe and secure when they come to the beach.”

With parking spaces already limited on the island some say instead of raising prices they should go back to the basics.

“A trolley service running throughout the beach and carrying people from the mainland is I think the best solution long term,” said Dru Hoge.

There will be a public hearing on March 19th for citizens to share their thoughts on the proposed changes.

If approved the changes would start as early as this summer.
