Virus hits piglets hard on North Carolina farms

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Commercial hogs farms in North Carolina are being hit hard by a virus that kills most of the piglets it infects.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that nearly a third of the state’s 32,000 commercial hog farms have been it by the virus.

The porcine epidemic diarrhea, or PED virus, thrives in cold, wet winter months.

State veterinarian David Marshall said about 100 farms are being infected each week.

The virus first appeared in Iowa last spring and reached North Carolina in late June. North Carolina is the nation’s second largest hog producer, with nearly nine million hogs on farms across the state.

Kelly Zering with North Carolina State University said it appears about 2 percent of the herd will be lost across the nation.

REPORT IT: Brunswick Co. soldier surprises wife, daughter with early homecoming

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County woman and her daughter got quite the surprise for mom’s birthday earlier this week.

Master Sgt. Brian Hakey, a soldier stationed in Afghanistan, returned home to Brunswick County Sunday. His wife Tina and daughter Anna did not expect him until next month, but he secretly managed to arrange to be here early to celebrate his Tina’s birthday Monday.

That morning, the Army JROTC class at South Brunswick High School, of which Anna is a member, helped MSgt. Hakey surprise his wife and daughter.

They told Anna because her dad could not be home, they would like to lift her mom’s spirits by singing “Happy Birthday.” So Anna feigned illness to lure mom to come in. On the final verse Brian entered and added his voice, surprising his family.

SBHS broadcasting/journalism instructor Amanda Penegar caught it all on camera, and the school was kind enough to Report It!
