Barfield gets late challenger, Democratic primary for US House

Friday, February 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There will be a Democratic Party primary in the race to replace Rep. Mike McIntyre in the US House of Representatives.

New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield filed to run for the 7th District seat Feb. 10, which is the day candidate filing began. He had been the only Democrat in the race until today, the final day of filing, Walter Martin signed up. Martin has been a Princeton Town Commissioner in Johnston County since 1999.

“We’ve actually been thinking about it for a while,” Martin told WWAY by phone this afternoon about his run for Congress. “The main reason being that the 7th District will be one of the most hotly contested races in the country. We’re going to run to five voice back to the people.”

The winner between Barfield and Martin will take on the Republican nominee. That race involves former state senator David Rouzer of Johnston County, who narrowly lost to McIntyre in 2012, New Hanover County Commission Chair Woody White and Marine Corps and Army veteran Chris Andrade of Fayetteville.

Wilmington attorney J. Wesley Casteen has also filed to run as a Libertarian. He is unopposed in that race.

The primary elections are May 6.
