Police searching for shooter after store, several cars struck by bullets

Friday, February 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for a suspect who they say fired shots into a Wilmington business and several vehicles last night, just hours after a man was shot a few blocks away.

Police say it happened at the intersection of 14th and Dawson streets around 7 p.m., five hours after a shooting at 15th and Wooster streets sent a man to the hospital.

They say when officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the area, they found that the store on the corner, Sam’s Superette, was struck by two rounds. Police also found several cars that had also been hit by bullets.

Police say witnesses told them that a person on foot may have been the target of the gunfire. Witnesses also told them they think the suspect’s vehicle is a burgundy SUV, possibly a Jeep.

Ola Lewis files to run for NC Supreme Court Chief Justice

Friday, February 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was no secret Brunswick County Resident Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis planned to run for North Carolina Supreme Court this year. She made that announcement last summer. What she had kept quiet was her intention to run for Chief Justice.

Lewis filed to run for the state’s highest judicial position at the NC Board of Elections office in Raleigh this morning about an hour before the filing period’s noon deadline.

She will run against Supreme Court Associate Justice Mark Martin, who has been on the Supreme Court since 1999. The seat is currently held by Sarah Parker, who is not running because justices must retire by age 72 under state law.

Lewis and Martin are both Republicans. Judicial races in North Carolina are non-partisan.
