UNCW could be on hook for $965,500 on Peterson

UNCW could pay former men’s basketball coach Buzz Peterson as much as $965,529.67 over the next two years, according to an updated figure provided by the university on Thursday.

Peterson was the fired by UNCW last week after four seasons with two years remaining on his contract. The deal called for the coach to receive $440,000 in guaranteed annual salary through March 31, 2016.

The updated amount accounts for vacation time and other benefits detailed in his contract. He’ll continue to be paid in monthly installments, per the contract.

Check out the first ever Food Truck Frolic at Ogden Park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Food Truck Frolic is taking over Ogden Park Sunday, March 23. Local foodies will get the chance to bite into something delicious and give back to the New Hanover County Park System.

Director of Donor Relations Janine Powell stopped by Good Morning Carolina to dish up all the details. In addition to rattling off all of the great vendors taking part in the event, she explained why private donations are needed in addition to current public fundings.

Check out her whole interview, after reading through the list of vendors who will be on hand between 12 and 5 p.m. near the playground at Ogden Park. Admission is free and participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

Participating vendors include:
•Catch, featuring nationally known Chef Keith Rhodes of Top Chef
•Poor Piggy’s
•P.T.’s Olde Fashioned Grille
•Trolley Stop
•Noni Bacca
•Fermental Beer and Wine
•Rita’s Ice
•Granny Niece’s Ice Cream

Proceeds from food and beverages purchased will help improve and enhance New Hanover County Parks through the Parks Conservancy of New Hanover County.

Flames sparked by smoking materials destroys storage building

Friday, March 21st, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters say smoking materials sent a storage building up in flames early this morning, leaving the structure completely destroyed.

Wilmington Fire crews say they got the call just after 5:30 a.m. reporting an outside structure at 4134 Masonboro Loop Road was on fire. They say crews began battling the flames soon after, but were unable to save the storage building.

Firefighters say the flames did about $25,000 worth of damage to the building. Investigators say smoking material that was not disposed of properly sparked the fire, deeming it accidental. They say no one was hurt in the fire.
