Moore County schools see benefits from laptops

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

CAMERON, NC (AP) — Some Moore County teachers say student use of laptops is resulting in better attendance, fewer discipline problems and more learning opportunities.

The Fayetteville Observer reported about 3,400 more students will get laptops by next week. Some got laptops Monday, while other students will receive theirs by March 26.

The deliveries will complete the second phase of the digital effort, under which every student in the school system will have a laptop by the 2015-16 school year.

Superintendent Aaron Spence said schools already are seeing benefits from the first phase of the effort, which started in the 2012-13 school year. Union Pines teacher Bill Moore says he’s been a teacher for 27 years and this is his best year ever because of the laptops.

Asheville abortion services to move to new clinic

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — A Planned Parenthood facility scheduled to open this summer will take over the abortion services provided by another clinic in Asheville.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Femcare said in a statement that it will continue to provide abortion services during the transition, but it won’t accept new gynecology patients.

Femcare is the only abortion provider in Asheville. Its building is for sale.

Planned Parenthood in Asheville now provides services such as family planning, but its doctors don’t perform abortions.

The state Department of Health and Human Services suspended Femcare’s license last summer, citing safety violations. The clinic closed, then reopened.

The suspension came days after Gov. Pat McCrory signed legislation that directed state officials to regulate abortion clinics based on the same standards as those for outpatient surgical centers.

Wake Co. Sheriff: Six detention officers lose jobs

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The Wake County sheriff says six detention officers are no longer on the job as the result of an investigation into inappropriate relationships with inmates.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison told WRAL-TV that one officer resigned March 3 after an internal investigation concluded she violated the office fraternization policy. That policy prohibits jail employees from having any kind of relationship with inmates outside the scope of their jobs.

He says the investigation that officer’s relationship with Amanda Hayes led to the firings a few days later of five other detention officers for similar behavior with other inmates.

Hayes was convicted last month of second-degree murder in the death of her husband’s ex-girlfriend, who was dismembered.

Harrison says he found no evidence that employees were having sex with inmates.
