McCrory directs belt-tightening at state agencies

Thursday, March 27th, 2014

GARY D. ROBERTSON
Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory has directed more belt-tightening within North Carolina government as pre-emptive actions to protect the state from a Medicaid shortfall and a fuzzy revenue picture.

McCrory wrote agency heads and Council of State members on Thursday with the news. The memo says agencies will receive money in April that’s more in line with what they’re spending monthly. He’s also directed them to discontinue most salary increases, limit purchases and reduce travel expenses.

The governor says North Carolina is in a better financial picture compared to a year ago. But he’s concerned about a projected Medicaid shortfall of up to $140 million and uncertainty with tax collections.

Agencies led by Council of State members like the attorney general and state treasurer aren’t obligated to follow the spending restrictions.

Local organization gives free surf lessons to medically fragile kids

Thursday, March 27th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ocean Cure is a local 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to giving free surf lessons to medically fragile and at risk youth and adults.

Kevin Murphy sat down for Good Morning Carolina to describe how the organization touches lives. From helping recovering cancer patients to reaching out to children who can’t see, everyone finds freedom and empowerment on the water he said.

“We at Ocean Cure believe very strongly in the powerful emotional and physical healing properties of the ocean and surfing. During our charity surf camps for medically fragile and at-risk youth and adults our highly qualified instructors guide participants through their fear and apprehension around an activity that they otherwise thought impossible.”

Now, through website donations, Murphy is hoping to raise enough money to buy 4 WAVEJET battery powered surfboard systems so they can broaden the work they do for people. Check out video from life-changing lessons and hear more from Murphy when you watch his full interview from this morning.
