EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: He uses comedy to cope with his cancer

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

****SEE SEAN PERFORM ON STAGE TONIGHT AT 11PM!***

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) This week’s Extraordinary Person of the Week is a comedian who uses his jokes to cope with his cancer.

You hear all kinds of jokes in stand-up comedy.
Some not funny. Some hilarious.
And some that can only be told by the right person.
Sean Webb is a local comedian.
He’s the right person and he is extraordinary.

“Welcome Sean Webb to the stage….”

What makes a better joke?

Losing weight….

“Since Christmas, I have lost 45 pounds,” jokes Sean Webb on stage.

….or how you lost it.

“I started this new diet. It’s called cancer. It works,” he added.

Sean Webb is a funny man. His type of humor….taboo.

“The funniest man I ever heard was my old man,” said Webb. “He can joke in any setting, like at my grandmothers funeral. So much that the funeral director was looking at my dad judging him because he was making everyone laugh, and then I look back and see the funeral director covering his mouth because he’s laughing.”

“We all die people,” he jokes from stage. “It’s okay. We all die. Every single one of us is (one day) dead. Your dead your dead your dead. Wanna know how it ends? You die. That’s how it ends.”

But Sean’s situation is no joke. Last year he was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma.
Radiation and other painful treatments are yet to get the punchline he’s looking for.

“I just started a new trial,” he says. “It’s got a good success rate and we’ll see what happens.”

So why joke about it? Why poke fun at cancer?

“All the stuff I’m going through, I take it on stage with me,” said Webb.

For Sean…it’s therapy..

“It kind of sucks because if I am gonna get cancer, I was hoping it would be breast cancer so I could have these removed,” he joked from the stage.

“At first, they aren’t sure how to respond,” he told us. “When I introduce the subject, they’re like, should we laugh, can we laugh?”

And in Sean’s world he wants us to laugh.

“If it’s something you can’t laugh at, it has the power over you,” said Webb. “So that’s why there is no taboo for me. I’ll joke about anything because that’s how you get through the brutal situations in life, by laughing and that’s how you get through it. Sometimes that’s the only way you get through it.”

The joke may be on him, but his ability to make us smile while doing so…is….extraordinary.
And that’s no joke.

Sean will be taking part in the 2014 Cape Fear Comedy Festival.

Details on the festival can be found on their official website. http://www.capefearcomedyfestival.com/
