Freeman Park closed to vehicles for nine days next month

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach will close Freeman Park to vehicles for more than a week next month as the town begins work on a wooden ramp at the park’s entrance.

The park will be closed to traffic April 7-16.

The wooden “Hatteras” ramp will be built at the park’s entrance on the north end of Canal Drive. The town says the ramp will provide a solid driving surface for vehicles as they enter and leave the park. The goal is to alleviate traffic back-ups during peak times.

The town says the ramp will begin at the end of the existing pavement and extend north 320 feet along the narrow entryway between the dunes where most congestion problems occur.

UNCW raises $118,000 in 24-hour effort

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 24-hour fundraising drive raised nearly five times as much as the university hoped.

Yesterday, the school held its first 24-hour giving challenge hoping to raise $24,000. If the goal was met, UNCW would get an additional private gift of $24,000 for student scholarships.

Donors to the “24 in 24 Challenge” not only met the goal, but well exceeded it by raising more than $118,000. In fact, the drive past the $24,000 mark in less than 12 hours.

“The success of this campaign is a true testament to the passion our supporters feel for UNCW, and the commitment they’ve made to our students’ success,” Chancellor Gary Miller said in a news release. “The generosity we’ve seen over the past 24 hours is certainly inspiring when we consider the impact it will have for the over 70 percent of our students who receive some type of financial assistance.”
