WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County teen was sentenced this morning to life in prison without parole for a 2012 murder.
Yesterday, a jury found Marquice Antone guilty of first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection to the shooting death of Keith Gachett. Gachett was killed April 13, 2012, in Hallsboro.
Ordinarily, a charge of first degree murder requires an automatic life in prison. But in this case, because Antone was under 18 when he committed the crime, the court had the discretion to impose a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
Antone and two other teens were arrested a month after the murder after deputies say they bragged to classmates at East Columbus High School.
