Local man says his invention could have eliminated chaos in UNC game

Monday, March 24th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In a strange ending involving the game clock, UNC was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Sunday night.

One local man says his invention could have possibly helped change the end of the game.

Mike Costabile invented a faster way to stop time during a basketball game.

Precision Time System is controlled by the referees’ whistles, or a pack worn on the waist. Then, triggered by the sound of the whistle or the push of the button on the pack, the time clock stops in a split second.

After Sunday night’s game, the Precision Time System office in Bolivia has received one complaint after another.

Angry people from all over the country are calling accusing Costabile of creating a faulty system.

“Our office has received so many phone calls and emails today that I just finally had to walk away,” said Costabile.

“We never really came to any type of agreement so they don’t use it,” said Costabile.

Costabile says about 58 out of the 68 teams invited to play in the tournament use Time Precision during the regular season. But, when it comes time for the tournament, time is kept by a time keeper at the scorer’s table.

Professionals across the country and the globe use the system.

“I got to see my invention being used in the Olympics. It is used in all the games in Europe, all the professional leagues in Europe. The National Basketball Association has been my customer since 1997,” said the former NBA referee.

Costabile said his gadgets could have been beneficial during the UNC versus Iowa game.

“It would have reduced all the turmoil,” said Costabile. “All the chaos that happened at the end of the game,iIt would have reduced it tremendously. Or, it would have probably not have happened,” he said.
