Monday, March 24th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who police say slammed his car into a Wilmington home early Saturday now faces charges for DWI and reckless driving.

The crash happened shortly after midnight Saturday at the home at 6712 Yarmouth Way. Police say when they got to the scene, they discovered a black Ford Mustang had smashed into the back of the home, where people were inside.

Police say the Mustang went airborne before crashing into two fences, then hitting the home, and finally landing in a neighbor’s yard after hitting another fence.

The driver, Adam Matthew Battersea Molto, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, along with the passenger in his car. Molto is charged with DWI and careless and reckless driving.

Police say the home has been hit once before.

Woman assaults several with kitchen knife at family gathering

Monday, March 24th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington woman faces assault charges after police say she stabbed and punched family members at a home over the weekend.

Police say they got the call just before 10 p.m. from a family gathering at 820 N. 5th Avenue. Officers say witnesses told them a female family member grabbed a knife out of the kitchen before she began yelling, waving the knife around at children inside.

That’s when some family members stepped in to confront the woman. Police say she threatened several others with the knife, trying to slash at another child’s face, finally punching one of them in the head. They say she then stabbed her sister in the arm, leaving a large laceration.

Police caught up with the woman, Jacqueline Denice Williams, 49, a little later after she took off in a car from the home. She is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Annual Azalea Festival Children’s Tea kicked off all the festivities for this year’s big festival season in the Cape Fear.

Dozens of little girls got the royal treatment at the event Sunday, where belles and beauty queens dressed up in their Azalea Festival finery.

This year, a well-known children’s book character, Fancy Nancy, made a guest appearance. Face painting, manicures and makeovers made every little girl feel like a princess.

“When I got my dress on, my sister Ella, she’s two years old, she was like ‘You’re Cinderella,’ Adriana Bingham said. “She’s seen Cinderella and all that so she thinks I’m Cinderella.”

This year’s tea party was the 12th of its kind.
