WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people showed up tonight to honor Alex Newsome, the sixth grader from Roland-Grise Middle School who was killed in a batting practice accident earlier this month.
The player, coach and spectator memorial was held on one of the very fields Alex played baseball on at Hugh MacRae Park.
One of his coaches said Alex had a spirit like no other. Kevin Gaylord said he will miss Alex’s competitive spirit and fun-loving nature.
“He was certainly fun to watch as a player, but he was even more fun to talk to off the field,” Gaylord said. “After you coach someone for three years, it just kinda feels like an extension of your family.”
Coach Gaylord and all the players pointed to the sky in honor of Alex. Gaylord also said this is a good learning experience, and that they as coaches will make sure Alex is always remembered.
