Carolina Beach asks county for renourishment help

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

Carolina Beach, N.C. (WWAY) – Beach renourishment has been going on with the help of the federal government for almost 50 years.

The trouble is that millions of dollars in federal funds is slated to run out at the end of this year.

Carolina Beach’s Town Council approved a resolution Monday asking the county for assistance in getting federal money to help with beach renourishment.

“That would give us the opportunity to take advantage of 4.8 million dollars in federal funding that has just been found so to speak,” said Dan Wilcox, Mayor of Carolina Beach.

If federal money is received by the beaches it must be matched by some local source.

Carolina Beach would like that money to come from the room occupancy tax fund.

“The money in the room occupancy tax fund was built up for an opportunity just like this,” said Kure Beach Town Councilman David Heglar, “That’s a significant amount of money that the beach towns do not have to match to get the federal and state funds that are available.”

If the county decides not to give money to the beaches that means federal funds go away too.

“I think it’s important for county staff to explain to the beach towns clearly what their concerns are so we can address them,” Heglar said.

Kure Beach’s town council hasn’t voted on their end of the resolution but members say they’re supportive of what Carolina Beach has done.

“So in the long run we look at that as a very positive thing,” Wilcox said, “anytime you can get almost 5-million dollars worth of federal funds that won’t be available again in the future.”

New Hanover County is expected to discuss the funding as early as Tuesday morning.

A decision is not expected until the first of next month.

If approved and funded the project would begin this September with completion hopefully around first of 2015.
