UPDATE: Man steals prescription pills from Walgreens pharmacist at gunpoint

Monday, April 21st, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for a man they say jumped over the counter at a Wilmington Walgreens, held a pharmacist at gunpoint, before getting away with the prescription pills he demanded.

Officers say it happened at 4:20 p.m. at the Oleander Drive Walgreens Pharmacy. That’s where police say the man walked inside the store and jumped through the pharmacy window.

Once he was behind the pharmacy counter, police say the man then pointed a black handgun at the pharmacist on duty and demanded oxycodone. Police say the man left the store through the back door, taking off on foot from the area.

They say no one was hurt during the robbery, but they are still searching for the man, who is described as being in his mid-30s, weighing about 160-170 lbs. with an olive complexion and black beard. Officers say the man was wearing a black hat, shirt and jacket, with brown pants at the time of the robbery.

If you have any information, call the Wilmington Police Department.

NC report: More sought work in March, found jobs

Monday, April 21st, 2014

AP Business Writer

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new North Carolina jobs report says more people entered the job market in March than in most of the past year, and more people found work.

The state Commerce Department on Monday reported that the number of people in the state either working or looking for jobs grew by almost 8,000 in March. That reverses a trend that saw about 50,000 fewer people in the labor force in March than the same time last year.

Economists pointed to the smaller workforce as the reason for the state’s improving unemployment rate.

The state’s jobless rate fell slightly in March to 6.3 percent. About 10,000 more people were employed in March than in February.

A federal report said Friday that North Carolina trailed only Florida for largest monthly employment growth.

FIRST ON 3: Man charged with stealing deputy’s car

Monday, April 21st, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is in jail charged with stealing a New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol vehicle late last week.

NHSO spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says Friday one of the sheriff’s Alcoholic Beverage Control detectives stopped at a business on Castle Hayne Road to use the restroom. Brewer says the detective left the keys in the cupholder and thought he locked the doors using the remote key fob. However, when the officer came back, his unmarked GMC Traverse was gone.

Brewer says the detective immediately called his supervisor. A few minutes later, the car pulled back into the parking lot. Brewer said when the driver got out, the officer ordered him to get on the ground and arrested him.

Michael Wilton McGirt, 43, is charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance today.

Brewer says the stolen vehicle does not have visible emergency lights or a computer on the dashboard. He said it does have a police radio next to the seat out of view. Brewer said investigators believe McGirt may have heard the radio and realized just what kind of car he was in.

Brewer said the officer involved will not face any disciplinary action.

McGirt has a criminal record that includes convictions for assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications.
