Sunday, April 20th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Watch out iTunes,  vinyl is not dead.

Musicians and music lovers flocked to castle street for national record day. Gravity Records opened it's doors at 8 a-m to a long line of folks ready to get their hands on some exclusive releases.

Gravity Records owner Matt Keen says it's their busiest day by far. "We've had people lined up since 2 am this morning, trying to get some of these special releases"

For the past seven years, the third Thursday in april is a day folks celebrate vinyl.

Local musician for the band "Free Clinic" got her hands on a live album from the UK band "foals" she said, "I saw they had this record from one of my favorite bands growing up. They had the last vinyl so I bought it."

Hundreds of limited edition records come out in very low numbers from a variety of acts; everything from Hank Williams to Skrillex

It seems the old school format has been making a comeback. While digital downloads are still currently the most widely used, vinyl records are becoming more and more popular with a thriving subculture.

Jimmy Kaylis of local band "The Phantom Playboys" says
"Record store day is a pretty hot item."

Robertson agrees, "record store day is more like a holiday for musicians," and especially local musicians.

Gravity Records uses this day to highlight some wilmington talent.

Keen likes keeping things local saying,  "We don't pull in groups from out of state. We could, but what's the point. We're here to support the community."
