Via Crucis brings Easter message

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Wilmington, N.C. (WWAY) – Gone since 2008 the Hispanic prayer group at St. Mary’s Catholic Church downtown Wilmington decided this year was the year to bring back the march of the cross.

It follows the Bible’s tale of the last steps of Jesus leading up to his resurrection.

“Every year we would end with his crucifixion so everybody would leave all sad and stuff,” said Norma Rivera, Director of Hispanic Ministries for St Marys.

This year though she and the prayer group at the church decided to see the final days of Jesus through to the resurrection.

“I think it is hard enough to understand the scripture and what has happened and for them it is something that they can see,” she said.

What they saw was a spectacle, complete with difficult moments, some too difficult to watch.

“A lot of energy,” Father Bob Kus said, adding the Hispanic prayer group at St. Mary’s came up with this year’s production all on their own.

“They have a tremendous amount of faith and they’re not afraid to show it,” he said.

Children are typically the ones most moved by a performance like this one he said.

“They will never forget it if you watch their faces that was the most important part of the whole thing for me,” Kus says. For Christians he says it’s a message that shouldn’t be forgotten.

“This is the central feature of our faith that Christ came for us, he died, he rose from the dead

The real message and meaning of Easter.

Though this year’s event involved the entire prayer group the hope is to be able to do it next year with all youth.
