Woman charged after car goes into Jacksonville creek with infant in car

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — State troopers say a woman distracted while arguing with a passenger drove off a road in Onslow County and into a creek with her 9-month-old baby in the car.

WITN in Greenville reports 23-year-old Brittany Veitch is charged with careless and reckless driving. The patrol said the accident happened just after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The patrol said Veitch drove off the road as she was arguing with the passenger. Her 9-month-old baby boy was in a car seat and got out of the car unharmed.

No major injuries were reported.

North Carolina flu deaths reach 100

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — State health officials say 100 people have died from flu in North Carolina this season.

Officials said two people died from the flu last week, bringing the deaths from the viral illness to 100.

The worst week came in late January, when a dozen people died.

Officials say at least 59 people died from flu in North Carolina last year. The last deaths in 2013 occurred in May.

Health officials say young and middle-age adults are more vulnerable to the H1N1 strain that was the dominant form this season.

Police investigating after man who was stabbed shows up at hospital

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police responding to reports of shots fired at a Wilmington apartment complex overnight learn a man who was there during some sort of argument then showed up to the hospital with stab wounds.

Wilmington Police say just after 12:15 a.m., they got a call about shots sounding near Crosswind Apartments on St. Andrews Drive. When officers got to the scene to investigate, they stopped someone leaving the area.

That’s when they say officers found out a man who was at the apartment complex had just showed up at the hospital with stab wounds. Police say they continue investigating what happened.
