Police: Speeding driver led officer on car, foot chase

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police arrested a man they say led them on a car chase after an officer caught him speeding through a Wilmington neighborhood.

They say just before 12:30 a.m., several calls came in reporting a car speeding through the neighborhood in the 4300 block of Fairview Drive. When an officer got to the area, police say a black car flew past the officer’s marked car within minutes of parking.

That’s when police say the officer took off after the speeding car, but the driver did not pull over when the lights came on and siren sounded. Police say the man inside, Christopher Wojnarowski, 19, then jumped out of the car and ran into a nearby wooded area. Officers and K-9 units searching the woods finally found him a short time later.

Wojnarowski was arrested and now faces several charges, including careless and reckless driving, resisting arrest, driving without a license and exceeding the posted speed. Wojnarowski is in the New Hanover County Jail under $200,000 secured bond.

Multiple deaths, officer-involved shooting under investigation in Columbus County

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — Investigators from several agencies are investigating multiple deaths and an officer-involved shooting in Tabor City, District Attorney Jon David says.

David says the deaths occurred at two different scenes, but he would not say exactly where those scenes are. We do know investigators have blocked off part of 4th Street as they work. He also said there was a shooting involving a Columbus County Sheriff’s deputy. David would not say who was shot at or who fired the shots, but he did say the deputy was not injured.

The DA says he got a call from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office around 2:15 a.m. about the situation and immediately sent two of his assistants to Tabor City before heading there himself.

David says the State Bureau of Investigation is on scene processing evidence. Tabor City Police and Horry County (SC) Police are also involved in the investigation, David said.

Columbus County Sheriff Lewis Hatcher has not returned calls for information. The SBI has also not responded to requests for information.
