Dozens go bald for childhood cancer research

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The clippers were out for childhood cancer research this weekend.

More than $22,000 was raised Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church during the 2nd annual signature St. Baldricks event, "Shave for Sean."

In 2011, then 3 years-old Sean Fleming was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma. Last year, Sean's older brother Cole decided to start the fundraiser.

This year, more than 25 men, women, and children raised money by seeing how much folks would pay for them to shave their head.

Sean's dad Brian Fleming says childhood cancer research is severely underfunded "It truly is a need in our society," Brian said. "My son Sean, his main drug was Vincristine which was developed by Eli Lilly in the 1950s."

According to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is directed toward childhood cancer research.

100% of the money raised went to the St. Baldrick's foundation.
