3 more die from flu in North Carolina

Friday, April 25th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — At least three more people have died from the flu in North Carolina.

State health officials said Thursday that the number of flu-related deaths this season has reached 103.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says the flu season usually lasts from Oct. 1 to March 31. But health officials say the season can be prolonged by the severity of the outbreak.

Officials say one of the latest victims was between 25 and 49, another between 50 and 64 and the third was 65 or older.

State health officials say most of the victims have had some kind of health condition that made them more vulnerable to the flu, which is typical in flu-related deaths.

McCrory attends Asheville festival amid protests

Friday, April 25th, 2014

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has appeared at an Asheville music festival despite initial indications that he would skip the event.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports McCrory appeared at a Moogfest VIP pool party atop the Aloft Hotel. McCrory’s office had said he would not attend the event, citing a scheduling conflict. The governor’s office later said event organizers had asked him not to attend.’

McCrory said Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer had called and encouraged him to come to town. The governor said he’d planned to be in Asheville anyway to attend the North Carolina Airports Association’s annual conference at the Grove Park Inn on Thursday.

While attending the party at Moogfest on Wednesday, about 80 people gathered for a protest of his presence and policies backed by his administration.
