Teacher of the Week: Katie Coleman

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Kindergarten teacher Katie Coleman couldn’t believe it; she was a Teacher of the Week. She even exclaimed, “Stop it!” in disbelief of the news.

She truly loves her students and looks at each one as if he or she is family. She cares about them so much she wants them to grow up having already learned a lesson many people spend their entire lives soaking up.

“Obviously, you can tell: I’m a little person,” she said. “So, I create a bond that we’re all different. We have a rainbow fish in here.”

The rainbow fish is a project the students began at the beginning of the year and now they proudly display it on their classroom wall. Each student created their own individual scales…together they make an even more beautiful fish. It’s a reflection of the real world according to Ms. Coleman.

“We’re all created differently and I’m on their level. I see, obviously, how they see,” she said.

That is a substantial life lesson for children at a young age. But surprisingly, Ms. Coleman says she is really the one learning something.

“There is a quote,” she explained. “While we teach children about life, they teach us what life is all about.”

In addition to love reeling her back to the classroom day after day, year after year, their eagerness to learn tugs on her heart strings. “The little things in life get them so excited,” Coleman said.

Soon, she’ll watch her students grow into first graders and they’ll move to another classroom, but she hopes they’ll always remember what she taught them: “We’re all different…and they can do anything they want to do. And they are loved.”

Slice of Life flips across Market St. for new downtown home

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Location and seating arrangements may have changed, but the food is still the same.

The building once home to the Rhino Club in downtown Wilmington now houses Slice of Life Pizzeria & Pub.

After serving customers for 15 years at 122 Market St., owner Ray Worrell has taken his restaurant across the street to bring customers a bigger, better piece of the pie.

Slice of Life’s new location is roughly 2,500 square feet and can hold 87 hungry customers. That’s more than twice the size and capacity as the old location.

Pizza lovers can expect to be served all the same dishes they are used to, but if anyone is looking for something new, chicken wings are now up for order.

Worrell is relieved finally to be open after renovating for the past six months and helping fill a property better known in recent years for trouble than for its long history.

“This is a mark of great success to be able to purchase this building and take the ball and run with it,” Worrell said.

In the future, the corner lot will be transformed into an enclosed patio.

While this is the first day at the new location Worrell says this is just a soft opening. A grand opening is coming within the next few weeks.

As for the old Slice of Life location across the street, it will soon open as a new restaurant called The Fork ‘n’ Cork. It’s a permanent home for an expanded menu of the old Patty Wagon food truck.
