14 arrested after sit-in at legislative building

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — After nearly 11 hours of sitting, waiting for a lawmaker who never arrived, 14 legislative protesters were arrested at North Carolina House of Representatives Speaker Thom Tillis’ office early Wednesday morning.

The group is a part of the NAACP-led weekly “Moral Monday” demonstrations and were removed from Tillis’ office, handcuffed with plastic zip-ties, and led out of the building by General Assembly police. All 14 are charged with second-degree trespassing and violation of building rules, General Assembly Lieutenant Martin Brock said.

Police asked the group to leave Tillis’ office eight times and warned them they would be arrested throughout the night. They refused to leave.

Leland woman loses $2,700 in jury duty phone scam

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Leland Police say a woman lost nearly $3,000 after falling victim to a phone scam targeting area residents.

Leland officers were dispatched Monday night to a report of fraud. The victim told them she got a call from a man identifying himself as Lt. William Hall from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. The man told her she had missed jury duty and had a warrant out for her arrest. The victim said he told her if she paid $2,700 she would be free from the warrant and clear of any charges.

The victim agree to pay, but the caller told her to pay via Green Dot Money Pak cards, so she went to Rite Aid and bought the cards. When she got home, she called the man back and gave him the card numbers. Based on the advice of a neighbor, the victim contacted police to report a possible fraud.

Investigators tried to call the number back, but the phone was already disconnected. They also called the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, which said they had received similar reports.

Yesterday NHSO sent out an alert about the fake calls that have nothing to do with the Sheriff’s Office or the Clerk of Court.

If you think you’ve been a victim of this scam, call law enforcement.
