Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

CIVIETOWN, NC (WWAY-TV)- A Brunswick County firefighter lost his home to a fire overnight. 2 firefighters were injured while battling the fire as well. For 12 years Robert Prevatt has been fighting fires for one year right here in Civietown.

“I was in my room and I seen flames so I looked out my window,” said Robert Prevatt, the homeowners grandson.

Last night was different though it was his grandpa’s house.

“My grandson came out of the bedroom and said, grandpa you gotta get out of the house cause the front porch is on fire,” said Robert Prevatt Sr.

What happened they still don’t quite know.

Prevatt Sr. says leaves underneath the front porch caught fire by the time they realized it was engulfed it was too late.

“I wanted to come up here, but then I was like you know,” said Prevatt, “I hesitated and then I realized you know I could come up here grab my gear and come back and actually try to save my own house.”

Try he did but the fire proved too much. The home, their home, Is a total loss.

“Cause (sic) it’s actually your stuff that you’re looking at that’s what’s being,” said Prevatt.

He says it’s changed the way he thinks about fires and he’ll keep fighting them too.

They intend to save what they can saying this fire won’t beat them.

“I’m gonna (sic) rebuild,” said Prevatt Sr., “This is home.”

As for the two firefighters that were injured, one suffered a fractured foot and the other treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Everyone is expected to be ok.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Tuesday night was a big night at Topsail High School.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Kenneth Kampen surprised his children when he stepped out to throw the opening pitch at Tuesday evening’s game. The family have not seen their Dad since he left on his 8th tour in January and had no clue he was going to make a grand return home.

Kampen said he’s excited to see his son graduate before he returns to Europe for three more months. He’s also looking forward to coming home for good at the end of the tour and enjoying even more time with his family.
