WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former State Representative Thomas Wright is out of prison after more than six years behind bars, following fraud and obstruction of justice convictions.
The Wilmington Democrat was released from the New Hanover Correctional Center, which is a minimum-security prison, around 6:30 a.m. today. According to the AP, Wright will now serve nine months of post-release supervision.
In 2008, Wright was sentenced to up to eight years in prison after a probe into a complaint filed to the State Board of Elections revealed his mishandling of charity contributions and fraudulently obtaining a loan. The former Representative served in the state House for 15 years before being the first member expelled in more than a century.
