FIRST ON 3: Former New Hanover deputy sentenced to decades in prison for sex crimes

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A former New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy will spend at least the next 27 years in prison for sex crimes involving a child.

A jury this week convicted Harold Lamont Fletcher, 39, of attempted first degree sexual offense, first degree sexual exploitation of a minor, six counts indecent liberties with a child and 18 counts of felony secret peeping. Today a judge sentenced Fletcher to between 27 years two months and 34 years seven months in prison. Fletcher must also register as a sex offender for 30 years.

After a SBI investigation, Fletcher was initially charged on secret peeping charged in December 2012. The District Attorney says more charges were added a month later based as new evidence was discovered.

Fletcher, who had been with the Sheriff’s Office since Jan. 30, 2007, was fired from his job Dec. 10, 2012. He was arrested that same day, which was one week after the Sheriff’s Office received a criminal complaint about Fletcher, which it immediately turned over to the SBI to investigate.
