Camp MedStart gives head start on health jobs

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Most high school students check out for the summer and don’t think about school until August, but for a selective few, summer is time to plan for the future.

Camp MedStart gives students exposure to lectures and hands-on activities from a variety of health careers.

Kayleigh Westerling said this opportunity gives her a better idea of how the medical field really works.

“I wanted to get more of an idea of how the medical field really works and all the different kinds of opportunities that are in the medical field,” Westerling said.

Students had the chance to spend the day at New Hanover Regional Medical Center job shadowing.

“I got to shadow in the OR, so I got to see a surgery and I got to see how, like, after the patient recovery and how they do that and we listen to different people talk,” Nadia Felix said.

Camp MedStart is a week-long program. Thursday kids were able to interact with simulated mannequins at Cape Fear Community College and practice checking vital signs.

Abner Rivera says he recommends this to anyone looking to go into the medical field.

“It’s a great program, so I would apply if I were anyone else,” he said.

“I want to go back to the hospital and see another surgery,” Felix said.

Students who finish Camp MedStart can take a second, advanced week later in the summer.
