Third fire this year at apartment complex intentionally set

Thursday, June 19th, 2014
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say an early-morning fire at a wilmington apartment complex was intentionally set.

It's the third fire at Colonial Grand in the last few months, and it has some residents concerned.

No one was hurt today, but unlike the first two, investigators say this was no accident.

This morning's fire was much smaller than the two earlier this year, but it was enough to shake up residents.

Around 5:30 a.m. crews put out a small fire outside one of the buildings at Colonial Grand on St. Andrews Drive.

A couple weeks ago, an electrical fire destroyed a unit in another building, and back in January multiple units were scorched after a cigarette was improperly discarded.

A resident we spoke with said she is very suspicious and left feeling uneasy; so much so she would not go on camera.

"That's one of the reasons I love staying over here, because I feel so safe," she said, "but how can I feel safe with three fires in six months."

Some residents we spoke with say they're even considering breaking their leases.

The Wilmington Fire Department is working with the investigation team to find out who tried to set fire to the building.

We reached out to folks in the apartment's office, but they declined to comment.

Tar Heel plant should reopen Friday morning

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

TAR HEEL, NC (WWAY) — It looks like factory workers at the Smithfield plant in Tar Heel won’t be headed back to work until tomorrow.

The pork packing plant has been shut down since an ammonia leak Tuesday morning.

Smithfield representatives thought they would have the factory up and running this afternoon, but they had some electrical issues that delayed the cleaning process. They say the plant should be ready to start production first thing tomorrow morning.

Two charged with SC murder of NC trooper’s brother

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Two men are in custody charged with murdering a Shallotte man in Myrtle Beach.

Now family and friends of Alton Daniels are left trying to make sense of what happened.

“I lost it. It blew my mind. It was mind boggling,” said Kathell Williams, who was Daniels’s landlord and mentor. “It was like I had lost a close relative.”

Williams says Daniels was outgoing and did not have a criminal background.

“Who would bother alton? Who would do that? He didn’t bother people. He didn’t go around picking and being hateful or cruel to people. He was a people’s person,” Williams said.

Daniels was found shot to death in a car in a parking lot in Myrtle Beach Monday morning.

Now two suspects are in jail in Horry County, SC, facing murder charges. Meleke De’Shawn Stewart and Broderick Roscoe were arrested Wednesday in Chester County, SC.

Daniels’s brother Timothy, a state trooper and former candidate for Brunswick County Sheriff, also cannot understand how this happened.

“You ask yourself why,” he said. “I don’t have a reason for the individuals that are responsible. I do know it is a tragic situation for the family, the loved ones and everyone involved, even the members that are responsible for this act.”

Timothy says you can see just how much he was loved by the amount of support their family has received.

The family says Alton’s funeral will be held Saturday.
