Students Skype with aquanauts

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fifth grade students at Eaton Elementary School joined marine explorers Thursday morning for an underwater mission. Well, sort of.

The students connected with researchers working at the undersea Aquarius Reef Base in Florida through Skype. The crew is part of a 31-day mission. That’s the longest undersea mission ever attempted.

Of course, that didn’t keep Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed marine explorer Jacques Coustea, from answering questions ranging from, “How do you sleep underwater?” to “What do you eat down there?”

“The engagement that I see, that I witness as a teacher, when those kids get to see something that real right in front of them is amazing,” said Cape Fear Academy Biology teacher Carr Fullagar. “Whether it’s through Skype or if we travel outside of the classroom. It just opens up the opportunity for them to listen more and to be more engaged. I get a lot more out of it as a teacher and them as students.”

Fullagar says the Skype interview was a unique way to tie marine biology into the fifth grade curriculum. It’s an experience only a few classrooms in the world will be a part of.

Man tries to swim from officers in Sneads Ferry

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — A man accused of a probation violation tried to swim away from police in the New River near Jacksonville.

But 30-year-old David Milam was captured Tuesday night by US marshals and other officers. Milam was wanted by North Carolina State Probation and Parole Service for a probation violation after being convicted of assault last year.

He was supposed to serve three years of probation for assault and other charges.

US Marshals learned that Milam was in Sneads Ferry and when they approached the home, they say Milam ran to a dock and jumped into the water.

Marshals say Milam returned to the shore and was taken into custody. He’s being held in the Onslow County jail.

Crews contain flames after complex catches fire for second time this month

Thursday, June 19th, 2014
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters put out flames at a Wilmington apartment complex after the third fire there this year sparked early this morning.
Dispatchers say the call came in around 5:30 a.m., reporting visible smoke coming from a building in Colonial Grand Apartments off of St. Andrews Drive near Carolina Beach Road.
They say Wilmington Police, along with Wilmington Fire crews, responded to the scene, where dispatchers say a citizen in one of the buildings nearby spotted the smoke and flames from the fire.
Fire investigators are looking into what caused the flames there this time, after another left behind thousands in damage to a bottom-floor unit there less than two weeks ago. Before that, a fire in January destroyed at least two units there.
