WPD investigating after 18-year-old stabbed in the back, neck

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating after they say a man was stabbed in the back and neck late last night.

Police say it happened in the 200 block of N. 10th Street just after 11 p.m. That’s where officers say they found the stabbing victim, 18-year-old Kevion Jones, near the intersection at Chestnut Street. Police say Jones was cut on the back of the neck and in the lower back.

Officers say Jones told them that a black, bald man who was heavy set and around 6 feet tall was wearing a white t-shirt when he jumped him and stabbed him. Police say Jones told officers the man stabbed him for “no reason.”

Police say Jones was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by EMS for his injuries. WPD continues investigating the crime.

Suspect charged with murder in home invasion

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police and US Marshals arrested a man for murder in connection to a Friday home invasion that left one man dead and sent another to the hospital.

Police say with the help of Marshals task force members, officers arrested Zeer Nafis Cannady, 20, in the 100 block of Meares Street yesterday. Cannady is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and several counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, among others.

Cannady's arrest comes after a robbery at a home near the intersection of Lilac Court and 13th Street sparked a shooting Friday afternoon. It started when witnesses say three men entered the home there to rob the victims, according to police. After that, Wilmington Police say shots were fired, hitting 47-year-old Aaron McGhee, who later died at the hospital.

Police say since the reports of the crime included three suspects, the investigation is still ongoing. Cannady remains in the New Hanover County Jail under $2,000,000 bond. His jail records show that he will make his first appearance in court on those charges today.
