McCrory issues 3rd veto as NC governor

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has quickly vetoed a bill with several small unemployment insurance changes because he didn’t like how legislators altered the terms of a board he appoints to consider the appeals of benefits.

McCrory issued the veto Tuesday afternoon, sending the bill back to the General Assembly, which can override the veto if each chamber has enough votes.

McCrory’s veto centers on the three-member Board of Review. He says there are unacceptable provisions that stagger and shorten terms of current members he says have performed their duties well.

This is McCrory’s third veto since taking office 17 months ago. The legislature overrode the other two last year.

Sheriff: NC daycare a front for child porn ring

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

SANFORD, NC (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say a daycare and mentoring program run out of the home of a registered sex offender was a front for a child porn production operation.

WRAL-TV in Raleigh reported Tuesday that Harnett County sheriff’s deputies arrested four people and are searching for a fifth. Authorities say there are at least 10 male and female victims, ranging in age from 1 to 14.

Investigators say Bailey Joe Mills ran the day care out of his home to gain access to children. Mills is accused of then offering the children money to have sex with men contacted through social media sites.

Records show Mills has three felony convictions involving sexual activity with children. He was arrested in January and charged with raping a 13-year-old girl.
