Car catches fire after crash at corner near Wilmington fire station

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police and fire crews are investigating a morning crash after officers say one of the cars caught flames near a Wilmington fire station.

Wilmington Police say the call came in around 8:40 a.m. about a crash at the intersection of 8th and Market streets, near a WFD fire station. That’s where police say one of the cars involved in the crash went up in flames, with both fire and smoke visible.

WPD and WFD both responded to the scene and dispatchers say EMS was called to check out one of the passengers in the crash. They say there were no reports of injuries at last check. Officers and fire crews shut down a block of Market Street while they investigated and cleaned up from the crash.

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (AP) — The Defense Department reports that three Marines based at Camp Lejeune died last week while fighting in Afghanistan.

The military identified the three men as 34-year-old Staff Sgt. David Stewart of Stafford, VA; 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant of Peterborough, NH; and 25-year-old Lance Cpl. Adam Wolff of Cedar Rapids, IA.

All three were killed Friday in what the military described as a “hostile incident” in Helmand province. They were all assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion (Forward) in the 2nd Marine Division.

Stewart most recently deployed to Afghanistan in April, while Garabrant and Wolff deployed in March.
