No officer charged in April shooting in Hampstead

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — District Attorney Ben David says a Highway Patrol trooper will not face criminal charges after shooting and killing a man in Pender County this spring.

Tpr. Josh Kiser shot and killed Maynard Thomas, 67, at a home in Hampstead April 13. Officers who responded said at the time that Thomas was shot after he pointed his gun at them.

David says Kiser had the right to defend himself after ordering Thomas several times to show his hands and drop his weapon, which was a loaded shotgun.
